Palomba General Trading
Role:Hydrocolloids & Functional Excipients Application Manager – Bahrain
Location: Manama, Bahrain
Employment Type: Full-time
Workplace: Hybrid / Technical & Customer-facing
Regional Scope: Bahrain | Eastern Saudi Arabia | Selected GCC Projects
Travel: Regional travel required
Palomba General Trading LLC is seeking an experienced Hydrocolloids & Functional Excipients Application Manager to support customers developing pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and functional food products requiring advanced control of texture, viscosity, suspension, gelation and stability.
This is a technical application role.
The successful candidate should understand how hydrocolloids and related functional excipients behave inside real formulations rather than simply recognise product names from a catalogue.
Core MissionThe role will help customers move from:
Application Requirement → Functional System Selection → Laboratory Trial → Optimization → Industrial Validation
The objective is to develop technically credible projects around hydrocolloids and multifunctional excipient systems across the GCC.
Key Responsibilities
Work directly with R&D, formulation and product-development teams.
Understand customer requirements related to viscosity, gelation, suspension and texture.
Recommend appropriate hydrocolloid or functional-excipient systems.
Support laboratory formulation trials.
Compare alternative grades and technologies.
Coordinate samples and technical documentation.
Troubleshoot formulation problems.
Evaluate ingredient interactions.
Support scale-up from laboratory to production.
Coordinate technical discussions with international manufacturers.
Develop application concepts for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products.
Support functional-food and beverage projects where relevant.
Provide technical training to customers and internal commercial teams.
Translate application results into commercially viable product opportunities.
Core Hydrocolloid CategoriesThe role may cover:
Pectin
Xanthan Gum
Carrageenan
Guar Gum
Gelatin
Gum Arabic
Tragacanth

Gummy texture too soft or too hard
Poor gel formation
Syneresis
Excessive viscosity
Insufficient viscosity
Powder hydration problems
Lumping
Poor dispersion
Instability after heat treatment
Texture changes during shelf life
Interaction between minerals and hydrocolloids
Sugar reduction affecting structure
Functional Excipient DevelopmentBeyond individual hydrocolloids, the candidate should help evaluate combinations that deliver:
Improved stability
Better suspension
Controlled texture
Enhanced mouthfeel
Reduced sugar
Improved processing
Greater formulation robustness
Supplier Technology EvaluationThe role will work with international suppliers to compare:
Different hydrocolloid grades
Natural versus modified systems
Single ingredients versus blends
Application-specific functional systems
Alternative suppliers and origins
Cost/performance ratios
Candidate Profile
5+ years in Hydrocolloids, Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Applications, Nutraceutical Formulation or Functional Ingredients.
Degree in Food Science, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
Strong practical understanding of hydrocolloid functionality.
Experience working in formulation laboratories or application centres.
Experience with customer technical support.
Ability to troubleshoot formulation problems.
Knowledge of nutraceutical or pharmaceutical applications strongly valued.
GCC or Middle East experience preferred.
Fluent English required.
Arabic is an advantage.
Ideal BackgroundRelevant candidates may currently work as:
Hydrocolloids Application Manager
Application Technologist
Functional Ingredients Application Specialist
Food & Pharma Application Scientist
Texture Systems Specialist
Technical Service Manager
Formulation Scientist
Hydrocolloid Product Development Manager
What We Offer
Competitive fixed salary.
Performance-based bonus.
Regional technical responsibility.
Direct cooperation with international hydrocolloid and excipient manufacturers.
Exposure to Pharma, Nutraceutical and Food customers.
High technical autonomy.
Participation in new product and application development.
Opportunity to shape the functional-excipients portion of the PGT Middle East platform.
Who We Are Looking ForWe want someone who understands that “xanthan gum” is not an answer to every viscosity problem.
The candidate should ask:
What rheology is required?
Is the system shear-thinning?
What pH are we working at?
Are minerals present?
Is the product heated?
What happens during storage?
Is suspension or gelation the real objective?
Would pectin, carrageenan, xanthan or a blend perform better?
Can the formulation be processed at industrial scale?
Is the chosen system commercially realistic?
The objective is to create application-driven functional excipient solutions, not simply supply isolated hydrocolloids.
